Man Sees Reduced Sentence for Cooperating In Federal Drug Case

Being charged with a crime is a very scary ordeal for anyone. If you find yourself in a situation involving criminal accusations, it is always best to consult with a criminal defense attorney who can help you navigate this daunting process. Not only can a skilled lawyer work to set you free, their experience will prove invaluable when you need to mitigate the impact of a criminal conviction.

Such was the case for a young man, who became entangled in a federal drug distribution case. This individual agreed to help a few others drive an unknown quantity of narcotics into Virginia; however, they were thwarted during a routine traffic stop. When the vehicle was on the side of the road, the man immediately complied with the officers, disclosed the true nature of their trip, and told what they were carrying. His admission led to authorities apprehending the cargo’s intended recipients. Unfortunately, the man still faced felony drug distribution charges and knew that he needed top-tier legal assistance.

Once appointed, Roanoke criminal defense attorney Rick Derrico started negotiating with the prosecution to achieve the best possible result for his client. Mr. Derrico used the fact that his client’s cooperation was essential to the case to obtain a motion for substantial assistance, which allowed the court to set aside the normally stringent minimum sentence guidelines and allowed for greater leniency. Additionally, Derrico worked to have the man classified as a minimal participant, meaning that he wasn’t a significant member in the alleged criminal conspiracy. Ultimately, and due in large part to the man’s sensible decision to seek legal intervention from attorney Derrico, the man would spend significantly less time behind bars, after which he can move on with his life.

The outcome of an individual case depends on a variety of factors unique to that case. Case results do not guarantee or predict a similar result in any similar or future case.
